total communication handbook

A collection of over 300 signs, this dictionary has terms that are more appropriate to those living in Alaska. Select words alphabetically, and a few words are also organized by theme. We also have an index of all dictionary words.

The drawings provided are originally from "The Total Communication Handbook." This was developed by the Early Childhood Education Project for Hearing Impaired Children between 1972-1973. Being such, a few of the signs are outdated. If they are, you will find the most commonly used sign in the accompanying video. For detailed information on the sources of this handbook, view it here. If, however, you would like a printed copy of the Total Communication Handbook, feel free to download it (PDF, 44 Mb). Again, Thank you RurAL CAP for partnering with us in creating this wonderful resource for all of our Alaskan families. We hope for this to grow over time.
